From Dependence to Dignity: The Story of the Women of Lekka and the Onion Value Chain
Before FLEP Nigeria RAISE Project started in Lekka Community, Bauchi state, many women did not have their own source of income. They depended on their husbands for money. Because of this, they found it difficult to buy food, meet personal needs, support their children’s education or make any contribution in the family. Many of them said they had to ask their husbands for money always, even for small family expenses.
Their lives began to change after joining the FLEP’s RAISE Project.
The women received training on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), entrepreneurship, and the onion value chain. They learned how to grow onions and process them into products such as dried onions, onion powder, and baked onion rings. Through the GROW Assignment and regular mentoring, they gained practical experience and turned onion farming into a reliable source of income.
Today, many of these women earn money by selling their onion products in their communities and local markets. They now help to buy household needs and support their children’s education. Some of them also save money through their cooperative groups. Their income has reduced the financial pressure on their husbands and improved the wellbeing of their families.
The project has also changed how the women see themselves. They are now confident because they can support their families with their own income. Many said their husbands appreciate and respect them more because they now contribute to the family.
Selima Idris, one of the participants, shared her experience:
“Before this project, I depended on my husband for everything. Even when I wanted to buy something small for my child, I had to ask. Today, I earn money from selling dried onions and onion rings. I can support my family, save with my cooperative, and my husband now respects my contribution. I feel valued and hopeful for the future.”
