From Full-Time Housewife to a Woman Supporting Her Family
Selima Idris is the wife of a missionary and lives in Leka, Bauchi State, with her husband Mallam Idris and their young daughter. Before joining the FLEP Nigeria through the Rural Agricultural Inclusive Skill Empowerment (RAISE) Project, Selima was a full-time housewife with no steady source of income. She and her husband are small-scale farmers. what they produce is not enough to meet their family’s needs. Before now they depended on support from relatives and friends to survive.
Sometimes, Selima bought and sold farm produce, but she earned only about ₦10,000 ($7) in a month. This small income was not enough to provide healthy food for the family or meet other basic needs. Life was difficult, and they worried about how to care for their daughter.
Everything started to change when FLEP brought the RAISE Project to Leka. Selima joined the training, where she learned how to grow onions, process onions into different products, make and use organic manure, and care for goats. The training gave her practical skills that she could use to earn more money.
After the training, Selima started producing and selling onion products. Her income has increased to about ₦15,000 per month sometimes not up to that amount. She is now able to contribute more to her family’s needs and has hope for a better future.
Speaking about the change in her life, Selima said, “I now have a more stable income. It is not much yet, but it is better than before. I want to teach other women how to grow onions, process them into products like dried onions that last longer, and make organic manure for farming. Those of us who joined the training are no longer only housewives. We are now helping our husbands provide for our families.”
Through the RAISE Project, she has moved from depending on others to becoming a woman who is creating opportunities.
