The TLP Grow Assignment

A very practical part of the Transformed Livelihood Project (TLP) training is the Grow Assignment. Participants in Diko, Akwanga, Sheda, and Asaga took part in the Tomato Grow Assignment with the objective of putting into practice the agricultural and entrepreneurial skills learned during the training, while also helping them develop a positive change in mindset. Many of them were planting tomatoes for the first time. Despite challenges such as heavy rainfall and poor soil, they were still able to grow and harvest their tomatoes. Those who already had knowledge of tomato farming also learned new techniques that helped them achieve better yields.

As a result of the Tomato Grow Assignment, participants learned, unlearned, and tried new things. For instance, Precious Amos, a first-time tomato farmer and mother of a three-year-old whose monthly income is less than $30, earned ₦11,000 ($7) from her harvest, which helped support her family. Other participants used their tomatoes at home and also shared with neighbors. The assignment also encouraged new ideas: Blessing Jonah, aside from planting tomatoes, decided to start a Nutri Pap business; Mrs. Aderewa began her Adun (fried beans) business; and Sadiya started making easy-to-wear dresses. These are just a few among many other participants.

Through this assignment, participants gained practical skills and the confidence to start something new beyond just growing tomatoes. Subsequently, participants will receive goats and Beehives while they continue to engage with each other in their mentoring & cooperative groups established by FLEP.
