Resilience in Action: Mrs. Aderewa’s Path to Financial Growth

Mrs. Aderewa Barnabas, 45 years old, is a participant of the Transformed Livelihood Project (TLP) in Akwanga. She is a classroom teacher who earns ₦18,000 ($12) monthly. She has four children aged 15, 12, 10, and 6, and is married to Mr. Barnabas, a volunteer pastor who receives a monthly allowance of ₦10,000 ($7).

After attending FLEP’s TLP Module 1 training, Mrs. Aderewa took part in the Tomato Grow Assignment. Despite challenges from heavy rainfall that almost destroyed her tomatoes, she stayed committed and resilient. Now, her family enjoys fresh tomatoes from her garden, helping her save money she would have spent buying them. Inspired by the lessons from Module 1, Mrs. Aderewa also started making a local Nigerian snack called “Adu” (fried beans with red oil) to support her family financially.

Applying the Lean Startup method, she began with a small quantity and she is currently testing her product within her community. Based on the positive feedback she’s receiving, she plans to increase production soon to supply local stores which means, more income for her.

With her new Adu business, Mrs. Aderewa hopes to make enough profit to support her salary from her teaching job to improve the well being of her family. She also plans to start producing “moimoi”, another local food made from beans, for sale. At the end of the TLP project, with her resilience and commitment, we are hopeful that her income-generating capacity would have increased and she would have positioned herself as a driver of economic growth in her community.
